Huron Meadows Night-O
November 17,  2012
Meet Director
: Jens Christiansen

Night O returned for 2012! With the best possible weather, orienteers arrived at the Sunset Ridge Pavilion area of Huron Meadows Metropark to find the meet director Jens Christiansen camped by the bathrooms, which had the only outlet to run the club laptop for his instant results trial.

Most runners or teams were checked in by 5:30 when maps were released for 15 minutes of strategizing. At 5:45, Jens yelled "GO!", as loud as he yells anything. The high scoring points south of Hammel drew most of the field in that direction. Very soon, the start/finish was a lonely, quiet place. If you didn't get all the refreshments you wanted, it turns out Jens eats when anxious and unoccupied.

Jens figured there was a good chance the course was clearable - total length was shorter than when Mark Voit cleared a 30 control daylight score o this spring, and there were fifteen more minutes. How much would darkness factor in? While knowing it was possible, he was still floored Igor Guskov returned nearly three minutes early and the magic 475 point total popped up on the screen. Igor reports that he was very nervous with six controls to go, so at least he was stressed. Meet director = satisfied. Congratulations, Igor!

Several brand new orienteers showed up and did very well in the dark.

The only negative feedback concerned the finish. Several people came right down to the wire, scrambling to find the finish punch on its table and punch before the 105 minute limit. Michelle Green hit it right down to the second, 105 minutes, 0 seconds, which pushed Michael Li back to 105:02, causing a stinging loss of 20 points which ceded 4th place to Rick Waldo. Oleg Koptelov was also right there, at 105:05, although his deduction did not affect his position.

For the next mass start event, there will be two finish punches (or maybe three!) to alleviate the congestion. The club's SI sticks hold 30 controls, and we have 31, so #61 and the start punch can be reprogrammed to operate as temporary finish punches. Jens will try to make the finishes more clear before the start, but if it is unclear, be sure and ask before you run.

Jens will also investigate ways to better convey the exact start time, so everyone is synchronized.

Speaking of late finish punchers, in a spirit of forgiveness, even though Luke Osborn disqualified Jens for being 5 minutes late after 28 hours of racing in September, Jens is letting Luke's 5 minute late effort after stay with the standard 5x20=100 point deduction and Team Osborn is still ranked. :)

As this was Jens's first hosting gig with night orienteering, your feedback of any variety on any topic is welcome. No offense will be taken.

Thank you to Huron Meadows Metropark, who was cool with us packing up right down to the Metropark police locking the bathrooms minutes before the 8 pm close. Thank you to Rick Waldo and Dennis Elston, who realized before Jens did that he wasn't going to get the equipment loaded in time without some help. Thank you to Chuck Newman and Nancy Resnick who stopped by Sunday and picked up the bulk of controls.

Look below the results for Igor's course-clearing, crafty route.
