Pontiac Lake Score-O
October 30, 2011
Meet Director: Rick Waldo

Sixty nine orienteers came out for this score-O at the Pontiac Lake Recreation Area west campground on the old Maceday Lake Road off of Teggerdine Road. The temperature at my house in the morning was 28F, but rose to the low 40’s by the first start. Skies were clear and the wind was calm, but this eventually changed to a high overcast and a cool south breeze by end of day. Overall it was a very pleasant day to be in the woods.

30 controls with values from 40 to 80 totaling 1830 points were spread out from south of the equestrian campground in the east to Teggerdine Road in the west. All the controls except for 1 white control in the campground were set in the complex glacial deposit terrain. The woods were very open and runnable with only sporadic ‘green’ in some isolated areas. I set the course to avoid ‘green’ as much as possible.

I had to recalculate some scores to reflect that the scoring was the first number of the control x 10 (e.g., 83 = 80 points). Matt Ross won the score-O with an impressive score of 1560 (He got 25 controls, or all but five.) Andrew Rowan was not far behind with a pre-penalty score of 1470 (24 controls), but a turned ankle late in the run had him limping in 7 minutes late, resulting in a substantial penalty. Mary Joscelyn and Cathy Roberts won the ‘White’ course, even after the grueling’ climb at the finish that I threw in so that everyone could get the panoramic view of the fall colors to the north.

Thanks to Gary and Marcia Harrington for helping put out the white course on Sunday morning. Tony Misovski pitched in at registration until my wife Mary Beth arrived. Mary Beth made oatmeal-raisin and chocolate chip cookies for the finishers. Thanks to first starter Lew Kidder who fortuitously found and re-hung one of the controls which somehow fell on the ground overnight. Tom Lee, Andrew Rowan (even with that sore ankle!) and Igor Guskov picked up controls. Finally, thanks to Karis Floyd, Julie Jeffery, and Thomas Bissett at the Pontiac Lake Recreation Area office for allowing us to use the campgrounds.
