Paul Shank, Assistant Meet Director

In spite of a beautiful, warm day, the turnout was somewhat low - possibly due to Yankee Springs being on the west side of the state. 31 people signed in, but some of these went out as teams. Those who participated felt that the courses were good yet challenging.

Rick Waldo finished first on red, followed in order by Mark Voit, Alex Izzo, and Mark Fochesato. Megan Donahue finished first on green followed by Paul Shank. Tom Trout, an adventure racer, came to his first orienteering meet and did the white, yellow, and orange courses finishing first in each category. Second place on orange went to the team of Amity Binkert and Mike Nye. Second place on yellow went to another adventure racing team calling themselves C2 (Colin Mitchell and Cheryl Lozon - also doing their first orienteering meet). Second place on white went to Kevin Fitzgerald, still another adventure racer doing his first orienteering meet.

Megan Donahue and Mark Voit assisted a young girl scout group (12 girls and 2 adult scout masters) out for their first orienteering experience. After instruction, the girl scouts divided into 3 groups to do the White Course. The Wiggins Group was the first of the girl scout finishers with a time of 31:45, followed by the Voit Group (43:15) and then the Dean Group 48:40. The Wiggins group did include Michaela Voit, who has some previous orienteering experience.

We were thankful for the adventure racers and the scouts, since the actual number of SMOC members to show up was only 9 plus the meet director and assistant meet director

Paul Shank assisted on the day of the meet, and was especially helpful in providing instruction for the first time orienteers. Mary Jean Keating registered the participants, helped keep things orderly at the start/finish point, and picked up the white controls. Rick Waldo, Alex Izzo, Paul Shank, and Mark Voit all helped pick up controls. My thanks to all the helpers.
