Meet Director: Alex Izzo
About
30 people turned out for the last SMOC meet of the season. As announced in the newsletter, the advanced
courses were “windows” courses–a format new to SMOC. The competitors on Orange through Red were given pre-marked maps
showing only small regions (“windows”) around each control. Judging from what I heard about how people
executed some of the legs on the courses, the windows format increased the
difficulty of the courses a bit more than I expected. Most people seemed to enjoy the extra challenge. I hope another meet director will set a
windows course, so I can have a chance to see what it is like to compete on
such a course.
Judging
from the finish times, the Yellow and Orange courses were about the right
length, but the Red was too long given the conditions – a lot of climb, rather
thick vegetation, a rather warm day, and the extra challenge of windows. There were two Green courses (Short and
Long), which were shortened versions of the Red course, and some advanced
orienteers chose those options.
Unfortunately, no one went out on the White course.
The
main complaint was the mosquitoes. Al
Newman requested an immediate West Nile Virus shot when he completed his course
and said the course was too long given the mosquitoes.
There are several of the
premarked windows maps left over. If you would be
interested in having one, catch me at a meet, and I'll give you one for $2.
Thanks
to Bill Luitje and Paul Vandevert for help picking up controls after the meet.
