We had a great start to our 2005 Orienteering schedule.  Sunday was a glorious spring day, unlike the sleet storm we had at our first meet a couple of years ago.  Over 100 participants ranging from 4-year-old Natan Zekic to 67-year-old Suzanne Izzo competed on the 5 courses.   A good time seemed to be had by all, even the couple that had to hitchhike back to the parking lot.

 

Meet director Chuck Newman would like to thank Rolando Luarca and Kevin Freeman who spent the entire day helping put on the meet as well as Mary Joscelyn, Rick Waldo, Alex Izzo and Jake Lueder who also helped us have a successful meet.

 

The meet director’s objective of having a winning time on the Red and Green courses of one hour was met and that would have been the case on the Orange course if a control weren’t missing.  The other objective of having all the White course participants successfully finish was also met.

 

Navigation was relatively easy due to the leaves not yet being out and the extensive trail system.  To compensate, the courses were designed to offer a large number of route choices.  Indeed the routes taken were frequently different among the top finishers.  It was interesting to note that the winning time per kilometer lessened as the courses lengthened.
